This treatment is offered to couples in whom the male has no sperms or very poor sperm or in whom procedures such as ICSI or Tese ICSI have failed to achieve pregnancy . Nowadays the frozen donor sperms are obtained from the commercial sperm bank s. Normally the donors are screened for infectious diseases of hepatitis B , hepatitis C , Venereal disease of syphilis and AIDS HIV 1 and 2 . The laboratory evaluation includes a complete blood count and sedimentation rate to identify occult infection. In all cases haemoglobinopathies such as Thalassemia are ruled out.The frozen semen is quarantined for 6 months . After 6 months the tests for infections such as Hep B, Hep C, VDRL and HIV 1 and 2 are repeated on the donor . If all the test done on the donor come negative, then only quarantined semen samples are released from sperm banks to IVF centre and is used on the recipients . The donors are matched for height , built, weight , skin colour, hair colour , eye colour and blood group.
