This is a procedure which is done just before embryo transfer (putting embryos into uterine cavity) to increase the implantation rates.

The procedure permits an earlier contact between the embryo and the receptive endometrium. The artificial opening produced by hatching may also serve as a channel for the exchange of metabolites and growth factors to and from the endometrium. In this system laser beam is delivered through the objective and one can open zona instantaneously with a single laser pulse in a few milliseconds duration.

We are routinely doing assisted laser hatching for all our cases specially cases of previous IVF failures. Patients with thick zona (outer wall of embryo) specially get benefited with procedure. WE were the first unit in India to start Assisted Laser Hatching in 1998. All our IVF centres have this technology.

Step-by-Step Procedure of Assisted Laser Hatching

Oocytes injected with sperms are incubated for 3 days to form day 3 embryos.

Selected day 3 embryo is visualized under high power microscope

Specialized laser is used to create a breach in zona pellucida.

This softens the zona and helps in creating an opening that would subsequently help in embryo hatching.

Hatched embryo then is transferred in to the uterine cavity using >embryo transfer

Hatching can be done chemically, mechanically or by using a specialized laser.
LAH is done using a specialized laser which creates a exact opening and causes no damage to the embryo.
Failure of implantation happens when the blastocyst is not able to come out of its outer overing called as zona pellucida. so LAH artificially disrupts the coat and there fore helping in implantation.
Very rarely it can damage the embryo. Also it can lead to twins pregnancy.
